Year 1
Welcome to our Class Page!
In our class, we aim to live out our school values every day:
🌟 Care for ourselves, each other, and our world
🌱 Grow by embracing challenges and new learning
💪 Persevere even when things feel tricky
✨ Shine by being proud of who we are and what we achieve
Meet the Year 1 Team
Your child’s class teacher is Mrs Abbott Monday – Thursday & Mrs Macdonald Fridays, and they are supported by Mrs Ayling & Miss Hurley who help make our classroom a warm and supportive place to learn.
Staying in Touch
Most of our communication is shared via email, so please make sure your contact details—especially your email address—are up to date on Arbor.
We're always happy to speak with you in person, but do bear with us at the end of the school day as our priority is making sure every child gets home safely.
Need to get in touch?
You can email us at: office.3200@crowmarsh-gifford.oxon.sch.uk
The office team will make sure your message reaches us.

Curriculum: What are we learning?
To ensure children gain the skills they need to effectively progress through school and the knowledge they need to be successful learners in the future, we have a bespoke Crowmarsh curriculum.
- Curriculum Overviews outlining the learning that will take place each term. can be found here at the bottom of our class page. These can be useful to instigate discussions at home.
- Learning in class will be posted here on our class page & sometimes on Instagram
You can find more information about the subjects we teach on Our Curriculum page of the school website.
We also share some of our wider curriculum events on our website Link
Learning at Home
Children spend only 20% of their waking hours in school. So, your support with learning at home is integral to your child’s success.
Reading
We encourage:
- Reading at home daily, recorded in their reading record.
- Please make sure your child has their reading book and log in school every day.
Phonics
We used the All Aboard scheme for phonics. It is a crucial KS1 building block. You can read more about Phonics to enable your support at home on our Phonics page Phonics
Homework
Year R - 4: At the start of the new term, you will find here on our class page a Homework Grid with a range of tasks/activities. These activities are intended to be done as a family and link to what we are learning in school.
As you complete the home learning, take pictures and/or videos and email them to the class teachers so they can see them and share your achievements.
Our Learning - Autumn
In Art so far the children have been learning how to create spirals by drawing from their finger tips, wrist, elbow, shoulder and body. We used a spiral to create a snail and colour to engage others in our Art.
Our Learning - Spring
In Maths we have been learning about Doubling. The children used lots of different strategies to practise their skills.
In our Science lessons we have been learning about our bodies. In groups the children drew around someone and then all labelled the body parts they knew. We found out that not everyone remembered their wrists and ankles.
In English we have been learning the Traditional Tale of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We learnt actions and made a story map to help us to retell the story. The children loved acting out the story with our stick puppets. We then innovated our characters and settings to create our own version of the story.
In our Computing lessons we have been learning about algorithms. We are now putting what we've learnt into practice by learning how to use Beebots. The children had 3 challenges. To make the Beebot move under a bridge, to make the beebot draw a circle with a pencil and to move the beebot as close to a wall as you could.
World Book Day 2025 - The children had a chance to 'Read our way'
During Science Week, our Science Ambassadors helped us to plant some peas. We're enjoying watching them grow!
In our Art lessons we have been learning how to sketch. The children focused on developing skills and having fun rather than a finished product whilst we sketched different insects.
Marwell Zoo
Everyone loved watching the giraffe!
We watched the meerkats keeping an eye out for predators.
The red pandas were also a favourite. They looked very cosy in their trees.
We had our snack next to the white rhinos and zebra.
We were very lucky to see both Amur Tigers. The female was snoozing in the shade whilst the male in the next enclosure was on the prowl.
The male snow leopard was enjoying the sun when we first arrived and then we saw him climb up to his cave in the rocks. The female was sleeping in the next enclosure high up and nearly out of sight.
Our Learning - Summer
We celebrated VE Day by all wearing red, white and blue today! We also decorated our own bunting for the celebration!
